Sinopse
At the beginning of the twentieth century almost all the surface of the archipelago was occupied by roças, agrarian structures that were created to produce in large scale two cultures introduced in the islands, coffee and cacao. Most of the fields were in the hands of the Portuguese. Between 1890 and 1920 the quantities of cacao exported from the archipelago were significant, but the decline in the production began short time after the boom. With independence, roças were nationalized and in the decades that followed the production declined even more.
At present most of the architectural heritage is in an advanced state of degradation and the production of coffee and cocoa is very reduced.
“Neither mine nor yours … is ours” registers a polyphony of opinions about the nationalization of roças in São Tomé and Príncipe.
No início do século XX quase toda a superfície do arquipélago era ocupada pelas roças, estruturas agrárias que surgiram para produzir em grande escala duas culturas introduzidas nas ilhas, café e cacau. A maioria das roças estavam nas mãos dos portugueses. Entre 1890 e 1920 as quantidades de cacau exportado do arquipélago eram significativas, mas o declínio da produção começou pouco depois. Com a independência, as roças foram nacionalizadas e nas décadas que se seguiram a produção baixou ainda mais.
Actualmente a maior parte do património arquitectónico está em avançado estado de degradação e a produção de café e cacau é muito reduzida.
“Nem meu nem teu… é nosso” regista uma polifonia de opiniões sobre a nacionalização das roças em São Tomé e Príncipe.
